Magazine Features Are Exciting and a Validation

Feature in American Cake Decorating Magazine

When you see that a wedding cake designer has been featured in a magazine, does it have any bearing with you? Does it make you feel like they are the one, after all, magazines are publishing them? Do you worry that they will be above your budget? Do you worry that they won't be available for your wedding because they are popular? What is the first thing that comes to mind with you when you see one of your favorite wedding cake artists being published?

Well, let me tell you about it. This week, I have been honored to be published in American Cake Decorating Magazine. This is a national magazine for cake decorators to learn techniques and ideas. I created a holiday wedding cake for this feature as it was the holiday issue of the magazine. Since I specialize in wedding cakes, I thought it was appropriate to create a glorious wedding cake. The feature included my step-by-step picture tutorial on how to make a component of the cake. This is my third feature for the magazine and each one is an honor in its own, since I have been invited to provide more of my culinary artwork for their magazine.

Stepping off of my cloud now. I've been so elated about my magazine feature because I highly respect this magazine and I am a subscriber who looks forward to each issue. Being published in magazines mean a lot to cake designers. It means exposure. Business owners are always looking for ways to reach more people to find their ideal clients. Maybe the article was shared to someone, who passed it on to someone else, who ends up being our ideal client. We also look at it as a validation of our work. Cake magazines, (and other types of magazines), carefully choose the author of features for their magazines because they want the feature to attract attention. They want to give their subscribers quality articles to read and learn or entertain. Being chosen for the magazine gives me validation that my work is worthy.

Being able to put the magazines "featured in" logo on my website carries a lot of meaning to me. I've worked so hard for over twelve years to become the cake artist that I am today. It was not easy for me. You see, I started my cake career at a later time in my life. I was a nurse for twenty five years and a paralegal for five years after that. My inner artist did not get a chance to come out until 2011, then a year later I started selling my cakes and becoming a small business owner. Then, when I decided to niche down my business and only make wedding cakes, it was much harder. The wedding industry, in my area anyway, is mostly made up of young ladies who started at an earlier age, especially the photographers and wedding planners. And then this 60 something year old wedding cake maker comes in and is breaking the mold. I love my new career of two years so far and plan on staying because I love what I do. Wedding cakes are what make me sparkle, especially making unique and artistic ones. Not every couple is my ideal client, but the right ones are out there.

As in the question at the beginning of this article, does it change the way you feel about a wedding cake designer when you see she has been featured in a top magazine knowing what's behind the scenes and a little more about that cake designer? Will it have an affect on who you choose to make the cake for your special day, or does it have no bearing?
