If there’s one component at weddings that wows guests each time, it’s the cake. Wedding cakes are no longer just a dessert tradition at the end of the celebration, they have transformed into show-stopping centerpieces, reflecting the unique style and personality of the couple. Among the latest designs captivating the hearts of the couples are the propensity towards textured cakes.
So, what makes textured cakes so popular? It’s in the depth, dimension, and artistry. These aren’t your ordinary, smooth-frosted confections. Textural cakes are artistically created with different techniques and edible materials to create not only a visually pleasing centerpiece, but a piece of art.
The beauty of textured cakes lies in their endless possibilities for customization. From romantic to rustic, quaint to lavish, there’s a style for every couple’s dream wedding.
White smooth cakes are a thing of the past. Texture and artistic designs are taking center stage for wedding cakes. It is extraordinarily creative and allows for stunning elegance and style.
There are so many different mediums to create textural, non-smooth designs that give interest. Let's talk about a few of the endless designs that can make stunning textural wedding cakes.
Ribbons, ruffles and bows - these ultra feminine designs are running wild with popularity this year and will continue in the new year coming. Women are embracing their feminine side with ultra girly looks. Runway fashion has been saturated with feminine qualities.
Colorful cakes with velvety textures have taken the lead this year with the Pantone color of the year, Peach Fuzz. A color that has warmth and modern elegance which took on the wedding world in 2024. I participated in a wedding collaboration this year with Peach Fuzz as the start color theme. This is the cake that I made for the shoot. Besides peach wafer paper flowers, I induced peach in the silhouette scene, as well as bas relief florals.
Bas relief - as shown in the photo above, bas relief is a magnificent way to create texture on a wedding cake. The technique, done right, creates a look like the design is coming out of the cake. This is by far one of my most favorite ways of creating texture on a cake.
Stenciling - Stenciling can be done by airbrush, royal icing and buttercream amongst other mediums. My favorite way of stenciling is using royal icing. I have several favorite stencils in which I purchased to use on my wedding cakes, giving a dimensional look by layering other decorative pieces around it.
Layering - Layering is the process of combining more than one textural technique on a cake to add dimension and distinctive interest. This can be done with appliques, pearls, cake lace, sugar flowers, to name a few.
These are just a few ways your wedding cake designer can create beautiful texturally designed cakes.
